SUBJECT LINE: šŸš€ ā€˜From mediocrity to winningā€™ - How club racers are using RTG to raise their game

HiĀ {!firstname},

A few months ago, a self-confessed 'Weekend Warrior' got in touch with me to ask if Road To Gold would be suitable for her. Her name was Zena (great name for a Warrior Princess, btw!), and if you enjoy racing at your local club on the weekends, then her story might be similar to yours.

Removing the ā€˜black magicā€™ around top class performance

Zena wanted to improve her racing skills, but was understandably concerned that Road To Gold was aimed only at elite-level sailors. Maybe she'd be joining something above her level... Itā€™s a question that we get asked a lot. I guess we don't help ourselves with the name of our course! But 'Road To Gold' is about your PERSONAL Road, wherever you may be in your sailing career.

After joining one of our coaching calls, Zena came to a realisation: ā€˜It struck me that the issues that sailors have to deal with are the same at most levels ā€“ just with a different standard of competition and complexity of boat.ā€™

Couldn't have put it better myself, Zena!

Improving your sailing is not about talent, itā€™s about creating a system. A system that targets your effort into the areas that will make the biggest difference to your performance.

One of my favourite things about Road To Gold is that it actually removes the ā€˜black magicā€™ and mystique around top class performance. It really is about the aggregation of small gains in multiple areas, always looking for ways of minimising your mistakes. That rule applies, whether you're an aspiring Olympian or a humble club racer.

Improve all aspects of your racing ā€“ STARTING TODAY

Make progress even when you canā€™t get on the water

Another question Zena had before jumping on board:

ā€˜At present, I cannot apply anything I learn on the course directly into my boat (and I guess most people are in that position with Covid-19) as I am not currently permitted to sail at my club ā€“ even for single-handed practice. Will that make the course less useful or have less impact, so would it be better to wait until I can sail again and practice what I am learning? Or is that not so important?ā€™

Itā€™s a valid point about the Covid restrictions, but I think thatā€™s a big reason why weā€™ve had so many sailors of all levels sign up to Road To Gold, because they can work on their campaign and iron out many of their weaknesses in areas that might normally get overlooked becauseĀ theyā€™re too busy racing.

There are a lot of savvy sailors out there using theseĀ UNPRECEDENTED TIMESĀ šŸ˜ as an opportunity to get ahead of the competitionā€¦ and you can too (but only if you use your time wisely!)

In fact, on one of our Live Q&As earlier this year, Olympic ChampionĀ Santiago LangeĀ shared his concerns that lockdown restrictions may make things MORE competitive when things open back up again:

ā€œI feel like people do more regattas than needed. Actually now Iā€™m scared because I think people are racing less and training better, so it will be harder at the Olympics!ā€

And while nothing can beat actual time out in the boat, there are still plenty of aspects of sailing you can ā€˜tick offā€™ in your downtime (for example, Hamishā€™s explanation of 3 Day Types is the best Iā€™ve heard in 40 years of sailing. Once you identify what kind of Day Type youā€™re in, the decisions you need to make become a lot clearer. And this invaluable knowledge can be learnt from home).

A reference manual to keep throughout your sailing career

Zena also wanted to know how much time she had to work through the material. After all, Road To Gold is a comprehensive program that takes you from start-to-finish how to structure your sailing campaignā€¦

Well, the great thing is that once you purchase, you haveĀ life-long access. So go through it at your own pace, and keep returning to it throughout your sailing career.

Hamish and I recommend taking notes along the way. When you come back to certain sections and refer to your original notes, youā€™ll realise how much your confidence and approach to your sailing have progressed.

Remember: all of sailing is a learnable skill. Itā€™s just a process. For any obstacles or moments where you wonder if you have the talent, youā€™ll find there is a way of acquiring that talent!

Get your crew on the same page

People often struggle to get their team pulling in the same direction.

But ourĀ Road To GoldstersĀ have discovered one major benefit of the program: they can finally get agreement across their whole crew on their priorities and next steps.

As someone who has been there and done it all before, Hamish knows what works (and what doesnā€™t). So whenever there is team conflict he can serve as an invaluable outside source of authorityā€¦

When Zena signed up, she used our Team Discount to bring her GP14 crew Leanne onboard with a login too. So where are they now?

ā€˜From mediocrity to winningā€™

This is one of my fav quotes weā€™ve got from our Road To Goldsters so far!
